Build Your Own Cold Frame Garden Now!

However, there are a couple of things you need to consider beforehand to successfully build this structure. Some of these things include:

Location

You need to look for an ideal location if you want to successfully grow healthy plants all throughout the year. A good site should have direct exposure to sunlight. Plants need sunlight to be able to process their own food so they should have maximum exposure to it. If the southern side is unobstructed, the structure should face that side.

If, for example, it’s not possible for you to build the structure on the southern side, you might consider building it facing the western side.

Additionally, you should also build a structure with slight slant facing forward. This is designed for better drainage.

Materials and Size

As mentioned earlier, it doesn’t take much to build a cold frame. In fact, you might want to make a quick inventory on whatever scrap materials you may have in your storeroom. You can use used lumber or old windows to construct the structure. For the cover, if you don’t have any glass available, you can use polyethylene or fiberglass instead.

Size of the structure does not matter that much. For most, it takes on the size of whatever used materials they have available. For some, they do consider the type of plants as well as the size of the garden they will be growing.
